Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 15, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how TalkOtter ("we", "us") handles information when you use our website and chat service at talkotter.com (the "Service"). We designed TalkOtter to collect as little as possible.
1. Information We Collect
- Account data: your display name, and — if you choose to bind one — your email address and a password (stored only as a cryptographic hash). We never ask for your phone number or real name.
- Content you create: messages, voice notes, photos and files you send, Moments posts, Photo Wall uploads, comments and likes.
- Verification emails: if you register or bind an email, we send a one-time verification code for that purpose.
- Technical data: standard server logs (IP address, timestamps, browser type) used for security, abuse prevention and debugging.
- Analytics: anonymous, cookie-based usage statistics (Google Analytics 4) to understand how features are used in aggregate. You can block these cookies anytime via your browser settings.
2. How We Use Information
- To provide the Service: matching, messaging, friends, Moments and Photo Wall features.
- To secure accounts: verification codes, rate limiting and abuse detection.
- To improve the Service: aggregated, anonymous usage statistics.
We do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising or cross-site tracking.
3. Data Retention
- Guest accounts: if you never bind an email and stay inactive for 90 days, the guest account and its public content (Moments, Photo Wall photos) are automatically deleted.
- Registered accounts: account data and messages are retained while your account exists. You may request deletion at any time via the in-app feedback feature or by contacting us.
4. Sharing
We use a small number of processors strictly to operate the Service: cloud hosting for our servers, an email delivery provider for verification codes, and Google Analytics. We do not share your data with anyone else, except when required by law.
5. Your Rights
Depending on where you live (including the EU/EEA under GDPR), you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict processing. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below. You may also block or clear analytics cookies at any time via your browser settings.
6. Security
All traffic is encrypted with HTTPS. Passwords are stored as salted hashes. No system is perfectly secure, but we apply industry-standard practices and keep our attack surface small.
7. Children
TalkOtter is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where required by law). If you believe a child is using the Service, contact us and we will remove the account.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the Service evolves. Material changes will be reflected by a new "Last updated" date above.
